History

At the beginning of this century people from sadder thought of starting a colony in Garden East. In November 1906 it was decided that the new colony should be called ‘Cincinnatus Town’ in honor of Mr. Cincinnatus F.D’Abreo, Assistant Collector of Customs. In October 1907 the foundation stone of a chapel was laid on Maneckji Road. On 15th August 1908, Messers D.F. Faria, J.P. dos Remedios, Philip Neri Pinto, Melito Menezes and A.N. Menezes went to live in Cincinnatus Town. These five families formed the Pioneer Corps of the garden area Colony scheme.

When the Spanish Jesuits took charge of the Karachi Mission, Fr. Vincent Giminez SJ started a campaign to collect funds for a new church. In August 1927 Fr. Giminez laid the foundation stone of St. Lawrence’s church. The first solemn high mass was celebrated in St. Lawrence Church on 12th April 1931.

Today the parish has around 650 families, from which approx. 375 are Urdu speaking families which are spread in the four different illaqas within the parish. The Golden jubilee of the church was celebrated on the 12th April 1981 His Holiness Pope John Paul II during his short visit to Karachi in Feb. 1981 blessed the Jubilee Commemorative Plaque.
